Atmosphere beats graphics, and mobile games prove it

June 11, 2026 · Lukas Bergmann

Some of the games that stick with me longest don't have the flashiest visuals. What they have is atmosphere — sound, pacing, and mood pulling together.

The Hollow Lantern is the perfect example. It's not technically dazzling, but the rain, the creaks, and the silences make it feel like a real place. I remember it more vividly than games with ten times the polish.

Atmosphere works especially well on a phone, where you're often playing with headphones in a quiet spot. Sound design gets to shine.

So when you're browsing for something new, don't only chase screenshots. A game that nails its mood will stay with you far longer.
